The adventures of my camera (cont'd) ...

Photo taken using Photobooth on laptop

My camera was supposed to arrive in Texas on Wednesday ... but up until yesterday when I tracked it, status message was "Clearance delay at Miami". Yesterday (Thursday) I called DHL and a woman answered. I gave her my airway bill and she tracked it.

"Hmmm, it's being held in Miami," she said.

"Why?" I asked.

"I don't know ..." she said slowly. I could hear her thinking. "Did you fill out a Commercial Invoice?"

"Yes."

"I'll have to call them tomorrow and find out what's happening. And I'll call you back." She referred to the information she had in front of her. "Okay, your name is E-l-s-p-e-t-h Duncan ... Your number, (868) 89 ..."

I stopped her there. "My number doesn't begin with an 89 ..."

Sigh. Whatever number she had for me was the wrong number. How come, I don't know, since I had personally written it on my documents. I guess the wrong thing had been typed into the system ...

Anyway ... tracked the package again this morning and it says "Clearance processing complete at Miami Gateway - USA."

  7. Dear Elspeth,

The mere fact that the camera may only need its screen replaced, you are rather lucky that it was still under warranty.

It is unfortunate that you didn't experiment without the use of the display yet fuctions should have still be present in the viewfinder or at the top. Something more creative may have emerged.

Now you have to ask yourself, am I using this tool of its best or to the latter treating it or my photographic work as a disposable camera?

This incident has stopped in your tracts and has caused an anxiety urging you be still creative while you are without it, hence your webcam still.

When this camera returns, I trust that you take the time to learn it properly and shy away from those candid shots that perhaps foretasted its damage.

Your camera is really a Minolta, Sony brought over the company.

    Many regards,
    thebookmann

  8. Hi Bookman, thanks for your perspective. Yes, I know Sony is/was Minolta. Also yes, I'm aware that I could have still used the camera manually (without the LCD) ... but I prefer to have it fixed and have all of its functions working as they are meant to. I don't depend on the LCD to know what I am shooting. It's just an added bonus to any digital camera and I appreciate it being there for various reasons. I have a manual (film) camera which I used for a few years before going digital ... so manual shooting without an LCD is not the problem.

I'm not anxious without the camera in terms of creativity - because I have other media in which to express myself visually, aurally, etc. My only 'anxiety' comes from wanting to know that the camera reaches and returns safely.

I'm not too sure what you mean re 'am I treating this as a disposable camera'. I don't think I am ... although all material things are, in the grand scheme, 'disposable'. To answer the question you posed: "Am I using this tool at its best"? I would say no, I am not ... for the reason that I have not yet fully explored all of its functions. That will come in time. So of course, when the camera returns, I will continue to explore all that it can do/all that I can do with it.

  9. Whoa. Must be my foggy brain but I'm not too clear as to what thebookmann was trying to get at. Elspeth uses her LCD as an angled viewfinder to enhance her creativity, not diminish it. Although I, personally, dislike the LCD, many of a modern camera's functions are reached only via the LCD interface.

I'm as guilty as anyone else in using an expensive camera to take photos of my cat, my dog, more of the cat, and still more of the cat. I don't think the camera minds.
