THE POWER IN YOU: Chapter 5

Early the next morning as you gaze from your verandah to the ocean, a shimmering humming bird hovers inches before you. You smile, seeing it as your new reflection—light, beautiful, trusting.
A sweet, clear melody wafts your way. "Since when do humming birds sing?!" you wonder . . . until you notice a woman, dressed in white, sitting at a distance on another 'tree house' verandah. She is playing a large wooden flute. The sound draws you out and down the pathway in her direction.
Closer up, you recognize her as Elspeth, who will be guiding the Kundalini Yoga and other activities for the retreat. Her eyes are closed, so she doesn't notice you . . . but you feel 'seen' anyway, as something about the sound of the flute touches a deep part of you . . . a part that hasn't yet awakened for the morning . . . in fact, it hasn't awakened in years . . . if ever?
A tingle runs through your body and you know that this is truly the beginning.

THE POWER IN YOU: Chapter 4

The Power In You: Chapter 4

With another day to yourself before other participants arrive, you take time to explore Castara.

You start early that morning on the beach, watching the fishermen pull seine amidst clouds of hungry laughing guils. Along with other bystanders, you begin to help the men, laughing as your hands grip the wet, sea-scented net of jumping fish.

You've never pulled seine before . . . you've never been to Castara before . . . you've never invested in yourself and attended a yoga retreat before . . .

All of these "first time" experiences and you only just got here! Already your life is becoming the new beginning you've been dreaming of . . .

THE POWER IN YOU: Chapter 3
You fall in love instantly upon entering the "luxury tree house" (as you like to call them) in which you will be staying for the 7 nights of the retreat. You have opted for solo accommodation, even though you know the shared options are more affordable and still offer privacy.
Perhaps you would have shared a 'luxury tree house' if one of your friends had wanted to come with you, but . . . cool early mornings, twice daily yoga, three vegan meals a day (a tough one for your die hard meat eating pals), lots of options for outdoor recreation and relaxing . . . those things don't appeal to many of your friends.
"Hmmm . . . Wow. Time to meet some more like minded people," you think as you flop onto the large bed which gazes onto the ocean through the open verandah.
The crisp, cool white sheets kiss your skin. The welcoming support of the mattress invites your body to release its tension. You sink in . . . you begin to drift . . .and, for the first time in a long time, you allow yourself to let go of the story—that someone, something outside of you needs you more than you need yourself and your own peace of mind & body right now . . .

THE POWER IN YOU: Chapter 2

(Music & Video: Elspeth Duncan)

THE POWER IN YOU: Chapter 2
You have packed light for this retreat—swimsuit, cool white cotton clothes for Kundalini Yoga, a few tops, shorts, a sundress, underwear, toiletries, a book.
Despite the lightness of your bag, the friendly man ("Porridge") who greets you upon arrival at Castara Retreats offers to help you to your cottage . . . or your 'tree house', as you prefer to label it. What else would you call these rusticly luxurious wooden hillside structures, nestled amidst thick, verdant trees, with wide open verandahs gazing over the ocean and huge windows framing pictures of fishermen's boats, soaring birds and clouds that gently morph into new shapes . . . in the same way that you anticipate you will transform within the promise of these seven sacred days.
Maybe everyone is down at the beach or trekking to the waterfall . . . but no one else seems to be there yet—except for the humming birds. You observe them with a smile, aware of the message they bring in the world of animal totems/symbology: "The sweetest nectar is within."
Indeed. You are about to experience this . . .

THE POWER IN YOU: Chapter 1

THE POWER IN YOU: CHAPTER 1
As you approach the place where you have chosen to spend seven precious days of your life, you take a deep breath. It's not what you thought it would have been from the photos . . . in fact, it's more. A wave of relief runs through you and something falls away . . . quite like a large chunk of sand collapses unexpectedly from a beach embankment when the sea rushes in to claim it.
Of course. Letting go makes sense. You're here, finally . . . in a new place, about to meet new people, have new experiences and—according to the retreat brochure–connect with a Power that will move you forward in exactly the way you need, so that you come away with a 'renewed and radiant sense of self.' There's no need to hold on to anything you've left behind.
At the very least, you can already tell you will leave as a different person. You can feel it . . . in the way your lungs seem to have expanded to receive as much as they can of the fresh country air . . . the way your shoes automatically slip from your feet as you step from the taxi . . . the way your bare soles connect with the warm earth and feel like they belong . . .

Powerful Dream

The candleholder
This morning after yoga (about 4:30 a.m.) I lay down, placed my hands over my heart, fell asleep and had an amazing dream.

In the dream I was going somewhere with a friend. Having forgotten something at home, I went back to get it. I parked the car at the side of the road leading to the driveway and left her sitting there with the window down. I intended to be back in a minute or two, but somehow once I got into my room everything slowed down. I can't recall exactly what I was doing—I think I was rearranging items. I was aware that I was taking longer than planned and that my friend was waiting.

Eventually, as I was about to leave, I noticed a light glowing in South-East corner. By this time it was dark—time had passed. I didn't know where the light was coming from, as there was no sunlight. Upon closer inspection of the corner, I noticed the light was coming from a small candle holder I have with a stained glass angel on it. As far as I knew, there was no candle in it and, even if there had been, I had not lit it.

I went closer and looked into the place where the candle is supposed to go. There I saw the face of Jesus glowing brightly, as though sketched with pure white light. It was the kind of intense luminous white you get when burning magnesium. As I stared at the face, it stared back at me through its third eye, which was a glowing white crosshair (Either of two fine strands of wire crossed in the focus of the eyepiece of an optical instrument and used as a calibration or sighting reference).
Crosshair
Now as I place the image of the crosshair on the blog, I realise it has a cross in the middle. In the dream, Jesus's third-eye/crosshair was pulsing with light, projecting to me, not only as a gift, but also as a message to use the power of my own third eye/crosshair. In the blazing vision, even though Jesus had two other eyes, the third eye was the one being used.

I knew in the dream that the illuminated Jesus was real and that we had communicated with each other.

I woke up feeling very grateful.

Welcome

My Spirit is a strong and beautiful Spirit.
She is with me always,
So that I am not led astray.
Where my Spirit is,
There I am.
Who my Spirit is,
That I am.
My Spirit is Love
My Spirit is Trust
My Spirit is Innocence
My Spirit is Wisdom.
My Spirit is True, above all, to my Self.
My Spirit moves me to be as I am.
My Spirit trusts me to be as I am.
And so I am.
Who knocks against my Spirit shall not enter.
Who moves with my Spirit moves with me also.

Remembering Christ Mas

We live in an abbreviated world. Txting . . . I mean, texting has diminished many words to a few letters. E.g. C u l8r (See you later). Tweeting has abbreviated potential paragraphs to 140 words. Similarly, the commercial hustle and bustle of this season of Christmas has been abbreviated into Xmas.  After all, who's going to waste valuable tweeting space and time to write out the whole word . . . C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S.

Many people say "Put the Christ back in Christmas." What they mean is, the "X" of Xmas says nothing of the Being after whom Christmas is named—i.e. Jesus Christ. Even though, historically, the 25th of December is not Christ's actual birthday, it is the date on which Christians celebrate His birth worldwide.

Looking around, I don't think Jesus Christ is the focus of Christmas to the general masses. The focus is shopping, gifts, eating, drinking and partying.

Sometimes when the radio is on in the car, I hear a song I used to like,—e.g Boys of Summer" (Don Henley) or "Feel Like Making Love" (Bad Company) . . . only the version being played is a remake . . . a horrendous remake by one of these new bands that all sound the same. What used to be a musical classic is now blaring through the speakers, sounding cheap and shallow—three chords repeated over and over and a voice wailing in the background. What makes it worse is when someone who has never heard the original thinks that the remake is the original and says "Wow! I love that new song by J-Lo!"

Maybe, similarly, one day in the future, someone will be on a game show like Jeopardy and the question will be "Which historical figure did Christmas celebrate?" The clock will tick slowly and just before the "baaaaarp!" noise that indicates time is up, the person will slam their hand down and shout out "Santa Claus!!"

This Christmas, with all of the traffic and the frenzy of people shopping, the onslaught of advertising all around us, the stressful vibe of people "having" to buy gifts . . . I found myself thinking "I don't like Christmas. I cant wait for it to be over." I didn't mean this in a Scroogish way—just that I don't like the commercialism and craziness.

I'm not a "religious" person. Manmade, organised religion divides rather than unites us. It judges rather than loves us. And in terms of Jesus Christ, I think many Christians don't live up to His name and what He represented—Truth, Love, Forgiveness, Humility, a friend of the downtrodden and marginalised.

I don't naurally feel moved to honour Christ by going to church, because I have often found church to be hypocritical. But I do feel moved to recognise that Jesus was a great Soul who walked this earth and has brought peace and healing to many. I myself have had personal experiences in which Jesus played a major role. This had nothing to do with "manmade church"—it was just me and Jesus on a one-on-one basis. I can't put it into words, other than to say such moments are simple and gentle yet life-changing.

So, on this Christmas Eve, my favourite day of the season (I'm not too fond of Christmas day itself), I say to Jesus—Even if many don't know You or remember You, may we all still be touched and moved by Your Spirit. May the true gifts of love, forgiveness, healing, peace, reconciliation, rebirth find their way to each of us, amidst the glitter, bows and wrapping paper. May those who hide or suffer in dark holes be flushed out and illumined with LIGHT. May those who use Your name in ways that I imagine would not be pleasing to You (i.e. discrimination, judgment and personal financial gain) come to understand that we are all worthy of the greatest Love and that no one is superior.

Thank You for your example. You exist in a form that is beyond description, beyond manmade constructs and labels. May this unlimited power be realised by each of us reading this, regardless of religion, race, gender, age, sexual orientation, social status, police record—and may it ripple out to bless all whom we encounter henceforth.

So be it.

Musical Beans

Yesterday I was invited to judge the "Investigative" category at a Girls' High School environmental/science fair. One of the entries I really liked was called "Musical Beans". The girls had grown 4 red bean seeds in similar conditions over a 3 wk period. The only difference was the music played to them 3 hrs/day.

The Gospel music bean rotted & got maggots, the soft rock bean remained dormant & also got maggots, the dub/reggae bean grew a bit but shriveled up and died, the Hindu bhajan bean was tall and flourishing.

Their basic hypothesis was that sacred/spiritual music has a positive effect on us.

A Divine 143=I Love You Day

Today was not a bad day, but there were points along the way where I felt temporarily overwhelmed. As I was driving home from town, with the radio on, I decided to get guidance by playing a game I usually play when I'm on a long drive (either alone or with others). It's called "The Song Game". Kind of like reading cards or consulting an oracle. Without knowing what is coming, choose an upcoming song for yourself (if alone) or for another (if driving with someone). Say up front what message the song will have for the person to whom it is dedicated.

E.g.
Something in the next song will answer a question you've had about your career.

OR
Two songs ahead of this one you'll find a clue to where you must travel next for your greatest benefit.

It usually works.

So, as I was driving, I said aloud: "The next song is my Guardian Angel speaking to me."

The song that came was one I had never heard before, but it fitted perfectly—the lyrics were really like me and my Guardian Angel communicating. Look and listen and you will see what I mean. The video is one of those that is disabled by request, but you can click here to hear/see it. I love it. And the lyrics are here: I want to talk to you ... Let's talk.

By the time the song had finished, I really felt that Divine communication was in operation. Further confirmation came when, on the way home, I saw various examples of what I call my 'code' for "I Love You": the number 143.
1 = I
4 = Love
3 = You

I kept seeing cars with that number on their number plates ( I took photos of them while driving). Messages confirming Love from Above.
This first one, 1437 ... whenever I see that on a car numberplate (as I have before), I automatically see it as "I Love You Elspeth" (because Elspeth has 7 letters in it).
"------, I Love You"
"-----, I Love You"

Prayer

May your words have projective power, may your face shine like the moon, may your body radiate like the sun, may your brightness be acknowledged by those whom you touch, feel, speak to and befriend. May you learn all the faculties of God– totality, reality, infinity, kindness and compassion. May your prosperity shine through you to serve those who are in need and may you extend your hand of friendship to those who are lonely. May your essence flow, may you be recognized by your best qualities, wonderful manners and your livelihood. May this day bring you all these blessings plus more, so that you can live healthy, happy and holy. May your nine holes be under your control. And may you give your heart to that one who is like God to you, so you can find your infinity forever. Sat Nam.

A space for healing

Some days ago I went to take location photographs of a friend/fellow yogini's rereat house up in Maracas (about ten minutes drive or less from the bay). She had asked me to create a simple flier for her to advertise the rustic healing space - for conscious retreats and workshops.

When I got home, instead of creating a flier, I decided to put together a simple blog for her, with images and brief descriptive captions.

With blog, as opposed to flier, she can:
(i) have more images and wording included
(ii) attach the link as an email signature and have it spread virally via fwds, etc.
(iii) easily send the link to people wherever they are in the world
(iv) be found in Google searches by people she would not have been able to reach otherwise.
(v) include the blog link (for more info/images) on a simple flier if she decides to do one

You can visit the blog here and find out more about Ananda Mahi. You may be interested.

Mantis Power

Source of image
*
This morning my friend Rosanna called. She said she had found a card someone had sent her and wanted to read to me what was inside. It was about this.

As she started to read (something about if each person is at peace within, the whole world will achieve peace), I happened to look up. There on the ceiling, on either side of my light bulb, were two praying mantises, completely still, praying.

Wow. What a symbol. Just when a friend is reading about individual and global peace: to look up and see two prayerful creatures with light between them.

I took two photos (which are in my camera).

The mantis brings interesting messages.

What the Lamp is

Today you will understand the main concept behind this current 'window' lamp.

According to this dictionary, a lamp is:
1.a. A device that generates light, heat, or therapeutic radiation.
1.b. A vessel containing oil or alcohol burned through a wick for illumination.
2. A celestial body that gives off or reflects light.

3. Something that illumines the mind or soul.

Based on this definition, Nicole's lamp is (among other things):
#1 a. Therapeutic radiation
#3. Something that illumines the mind or soul

It is not meant to be a reading lamp.

A friend of mine was spot on in a comment she wrote for me about the last lamp update:

"Spec, the fragments of light look like braille, kinda in sync with having to feel what the lamp may be trying to say at this point. Lovely!"

Exactly.

How blind are we all in the darkness of mind or soul, prior to illumination (enlightenment)? In requesting this lamp, Nicole wanted to consciously see her way regarding the 20 things she listed as wanting to change/incorporate in her life. As you will remember, I wrote 20 words in response to Nicole's list of 20 'needs'.

I made contact with Steve, a blind man. I asked him to type out the 20 words for me in Braille. Inspired and excited by the words, he wholeheartedly did so.
Clarity and Self Love

On Thursday 12 November I went to the Blind School in Santa Cruz to collect the words from him. Then, using a hammer and instrument for making holes, I transcribed each of the Braille words onto a thin sheet of metal. Light passing through these holes inscribes the essence of the words in the atmosphere and on the person/people who are present.

I'm sure you are beginning to understand that this lamp (like all the others) is about intention, vibrations and essence.

As with every lamp. there will be a launch. Anyone reading this (who would like to attend) is invited to have the experience when it is time. Those who live abroad and would like to have the experience, I will find a way for you to do so.

This will be the last update on this particular Lamp until further notice. Thank you for keeping up thus far.

One for my Birthday

My birthday gift to myself is "Oneness".

The above photograph is of my feet and my footprints on the beach sand. It symbolizes me standing face to face with the Self and committing to the process of becoming One. The "empty" footprints are not really empty. They are full of every aspect of myself that I am consciously welcoming, embracing, merging with in my True Self.

By extension, the 'empty' footprints also represent standing face to face with and seeing/reflecting the external other (i.e. the various reflections we encounter around us in our daily interactions). The intention is to see, be and reflect our True Selves, from a place of Love = Divinity (non-duality) within and without.

Using this photograph as a template, I invite you to create (as a personal meditation for yourself) a symbolic photograph of your own bare feet and your footprints. If you don't have sand, you can use your empty shoes, chalk marks drawn around your bare feet, impressions on the ground made by your bare wet feet ... or anything else you can think of. In your own time and space, stand face to face with your Self and recognize, welcome, embrace, merge with all that enables you to be the full and true "You".

Sat nam

I will close with the words in the birthday card that Daddy made for me:

You deserve the best birthday on Earth ... not to mention the Moon, the Stars and the Universe.

... and yes, it already is the best.

Elspeth
